I make small porcelain pots in a big old school building on a big hill overlooking a small Wisconsin village. I love seed pods, twisted shells, and the texture of rippled sand. Flowers and seashells have a beautiful translucency that gives them a sense of life, of presence. I like to put my pots where sunlight can strike them. Translucency is important to me.
When I first started working in porcelain, about 30 years ago, I made functional pots. Not so gradually, I moved to making sculptural vessels, and then pinched and handbuilt nature inspired sculptures. I am not trying to recreate nature, but only to capture a feeling, hoping to stimulate those who see my work to stop for a moment and observe the richness of the world around them.
